Steps In Developing A Wind Farm

LOCATING GOOD WIND RESOURCE

While publicly available wind resource data will help to identify areas believed to have adequate wind resource, it is still important to study a particular area using meteorological testing equipment over a number of years. On-site monitoring utilizes the latest technology for measuring wind speed, wind direction and other weather information. Along with local terrain, tree cover and other factors affecting wind flows, a complete wind profile can be established for each site. This methodical testing results in properly designed projects that with maximum energy production.

IDENTIFYING TRANSMISSION ACCESS

A site with good wind resource means little if there isn’t an economical way to deliver the power produced from a wind farm to the electric grid. Because transmission lines are expensive to build and maintain, proximity to existing transmission infrastructure is an important factor when identifying a good location for a wind farm.. EverPower studies all possible transmission solutions to ensure that interconnection costs, including any necessary upgrades to the lines, will be minimized.

FIND AVAILABLE LAND/SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITIES

In general, land for wind projects and their supporting structures is leased from landowners. EverPower seeks to partner with landowners and provide market-based rent and easement payments for the use of land. Additionally, EverPower works with the host community to maximize the project’s benefits while minimizing any negative impact a project may have on the local communities.

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES AND IMPACT

While permitting regulations and requirements may vary by state and locality, all wind projects require a significant amount of environmental studies prior to construction. Environmental studies cover everything from wildlife and sensitive habitat assessments to cultural resource surveys and wetland delineations. Environmental studies are conducted in accordance with local, state and federal guidelines and in coordination with state and federal agencies and are designed to determine how and where impacts to studied resources can be minimized.

LOCAL, STATE AND FEDERAL PERMITS

Once the environmental studies are completed for a project area, this information is compiled and presented to the applicable permitting agencies for their review and approval. The permitting process is typically an iterative one among the company, the permitting agencies and the public and may take several months or years to complete.  The result is a well-planned project that provides the many economic and environmental benefits associated with a clean energy project.

CONSTRUCTION

Once all permits have been obtained, the project is constructed in accordance with any conditions imposed by local, state and federal permits. Construction can vary by project but it typically takes 9-12 months to complete a project. After construction is complete, the site is restored in accordance with permits and landowner input.
